100 Women ‘on the bus’ with support
Opening a “window on the world” is the result of the latest gathering of 100 Women who Care Annapolis Valley, as the Windsor Senior Citizens Bus Society was the chosen charity June 21.
The women’s charitable group met for its quarterly event at Kings Riverside Court in Kentville, taking in three five-minute presentations before selecting the Wish Foundation as its fund recipient.
The Windsor non-profit bus service began in 1985, using a school bus to take residents of community special car homes out for community drives and tours. It has since expanded to serve care homes in Kings and Annapolis counties, and added an amended charter license to allow more groups to use the group’s bus.
“But a new bus will cost $250,000, and your very generous donations will continue our vision,” said service volunteer Leslie Porter. “Our current bus is 12 years old.”
Anne Parks, representing residents of the Windsor Elms, stressed how important the bus service is, “enhancing their lives.”
“Drives to Scott’s Bay, a pumpkin patch, the zoo, to see the apple blossoms or fall colours or Christmas lights,” she said. “Getting out of a home and on the bus opens a window on the world.”
Two other groups presented at this evening’s meeting: the North Mountain Animal Sanctuary and the Wolfville Legion. The farm animal-focussed rescue, care and sanctuary organization depends on fundraising and donations to rescue, provide medical treatment for and respectful, life-long care for animals at all stages of life and condition. The Wolfville Legion, committed to community service and care of veteran and serving military and RCMP members, is in the midst of a campaign to rejuvenate its membership and meeting space, reflecting its pride in the community. Both groups received $1,000 advertising support credits with K-Rock.
